Key Alkaloids: Mesembrine, Mesembrenone & Mesembrenol
The effects of kanna are driven by naturally occurring compounds called alkaloids.
In fact, there are over 25 alkaloids in Sceletium tortuosum, most notably mesembrine, mesembrenone, and mesembrenol.
Mesembrine is the primary active alkaloid in kanna, and is known to act as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI).
It also inhibits PDE4 (phosphodiesterase-4), an enzyme linked to mood regulation and cognitive function.
Mesembrenone and mesembrenol are other prominent kanna alkaloids that provide similar effects.
The combination of these compounds, as well as other key alkaloids, gives kanna its unique ability to influence mood without heavy sedation or stimulation.
Effects on Serotonin and Mood
Kanna’s effects are keyed by its interaction with serotonin. By helping increase the availability of serotonin in the brain, kanna is believed to support:
- A more positive mood
- Reduced feelings of stress or tension
- Greater emotional balance
It’s important to note, again, that kanna is a natural supplement, and not a medication.
